if the only tissue boxes on the shelves at the store are ugly or boring, you don't actually have to like. put up with that. you can just buy some in the same kind of box as the one you already have at home, pop both boxes open with a butter knife, transplant the tissues to the pretty box, and seal it with some school glue or something. the arrangement of tissues inside the box isn't rocket science. you just grab the stack and move it from one box to another.

no one can stop you from doing this. not even god.

you do not have to let go of the cute flower pattern in favor of some kind of horrid sludge-colored abstract painting of depression, nor do you have to commit to the tyrrany of a decorative tissue box cover that will never change. "aw but that's silly, that shouldn't matter to me, it's just a tissue box" this tiny joy is free and i DEMAND THAT YOU SHAMELESSLY GRASP IT.

for real though, not to like, spin this silliness out into something Way Too Deep but: just kidding, i'm about to do that because this is my blog and that's what blogs are for and also i did not sleep very well. anyway, i think a lot about the way that i Take Aesthetic Control Over Things, viciously, constantly. i have very little control over my life. i'm disabled, i'm poor, i live in a country run by people that would really rather i just die. i don't get to choose where i live or what i wear or what i eat as freely as i'd be able to if i had more income and a working body.

so i go out of my way to do these little things. to subvert the ugliness of 90% of tissue box designs (WHO IS DESIGNING THESE? DO THEY NEED HELP? SO MANY OF THEM ARE SO ABJECTLY DEPRESSING). to buy the pastel-colored thing whenever i can. to plaster everything in stickers and washi tape and cheap-ass aliexpress fairy lights. to hide the ugly sickly orange prescription bottles (once again: why-- nevermind i googled it, it's to filter out UV light so it won't mess with the meds. okay at least that's purposefully ugly) in pretty paperboard boxes i got at Ross Dress For Less on a complete whim because i am that bitch who cannot go home from the store without a pretty box.

if things cannot be easy then god damn it, they will be pretty

Try this ...

You can also make permanent cover boxes for tissues or anything else you want to hide.

I don't know why so many patterns are hideous. My current one has a toucan on it, which is pretty cool. I've seen some lovely marbling too. Then they come out with ... mauve polka dots on grey. WTF.

Thank goodness they don't work in Air Traffic Control. There need to be jobs for idiots where their fuckups are easily fixed.

"no one can stop you from doing this. not even god." Alright, you've convinced me

To be serious, I'm glad you've found something that brings you joy! I'll definitely be trying this out myself, as someone who cannot stand 99% of tissue boxes either

You and my wife are handshake meme-ing on this matter.

We don't go through the trouble of reboxing our tissues, but dismay over a lot of modern household decor and aesthetic choices is a common sentiment at our house. I'm more willing to settle for the bland available choice, but her insistence on furniture and decor that Looks Good is something that's helped make our apartment feel nicer.

I think one of the nicest things I've heard about this overall ethos for everyday objects was from a short video primer on the mechanical keyboard hobbyspace. The host was asking the hobbyist why he cared so much to go through the effort of a custom build. And his reply was basically that it matters for everyday objects to be something that you actually enjoy using. A keyboard is an essential workspace tool that you spend hours and hours using on the daily. If you're going to spend that much time with an object, your life will be better if it feels good to use and to look at. I don't take that attitude toward keyboards, but I do take that toward things like soaps, scented candles, and cooking tools. The former two are just little sensory joys that brighten my day, and the third is that cooking from scratch is something I care a lot about and is something that brings me joy. I like working with fresh produce and I like using kitchen tools that are well made and look good. They make the task easier and more enjoyable. I had a cast iron pot in a really pretty shade of teal, and when it broke I had to swap it for a different colorway because the teal was out of stock. I like the dark green I replaced it with, but I do miss the light color I used to have, even though this pot does just as good a job.
